Question-mark bricks add a useful layer of surprise. Striking them may produce coins or special items, while other bricks can be worth checking when there is spare time. A mushroom changes Mario into Super Mario, making him larger and allowing him to smash bricks overhead. Taking a hit in that form removes the transformation rather than ending the run immediately.
